At the time that this house was built there would have been waves of purple Flax fields all around. The area was famed as a major centre for linen production - and, within houses and cottages for miles around, weavers and home workers would produce cloth for use in all walks of life. One of the merchants, those who held the market together...contracted the farmers, organised the convertion of the flax to yarn and who would oversee the weaving, finishing and sale of the cloth to manufacturers and end users... lived in this house.
